Overview
Although the Gokyo Chola Pass journey to Gokyo Ri is less popular than the more typical Everest Base Camp Trek, it offers similar views and greater solitude along the way.
One of the most famous and adventurous climbs in the Everest region is the Gokyo Chola Pass. As it encompasses the entire upper Khumbu, beautiful Gokyo Lake, famed viewpoint Gokyo-Ri, and, of course, the foot of the world’s tallest mountain, Everest, the Gokyo Chola Pass trip is the pinnacle of classic tradition, culture, and top-tier adventure.
The trail snakes ups and downs past rich Sherpa hubs like Namche, Thame, Khumjung, Phortse, and Dhole to Gokyo Lake at 4790m after a short flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. From Gokyo Ri, you can see Mt. Everest’s western shoulder, Lotse Nuptse, and far away Makalu (5483 m.). After crossing Cho La Pass (5667 meters), the trail ascends to Kalapattar at 5545 meters. Finally, a trek requiring prior experience and trekking through the Himalayan pass brings you into the heart of the mountains and into the culture of the Everest region, culminating at the foot of the big peaks themselves.
